Hinges, lock plates and the
like can be quite a fiddle to cut accurately with a chisel,
also time and cash
consuming with a router and jig. Once you have mastered the
simple technique and developed a working
rhythm, the No. 40B makes quick, precise and neat work of the
job. Hinges are set easily to the required
depth in a smooth flat-bottomed recess with this plane, which
can also double as a lightweight Scrub
Plane. You can also use No. 40B to make surface repairs to
your architectural woodwork or furniture.
It has the simple set up of basic bench planes but with an
exceptionally wide mouth giving a clear view
of the work area in front of the blade. Blade adjustment is
by sighting along the sole and incrementally
tapping the blade to the desired set. To make the final cut
totally accurate, use the actual leaf of the hinge
or whatever is being recessed to set the blade. Supplied with
ductile iron body, bronze lever cap, A2 tool
steel cryogenically treated blade, brass and steel fitments
with cherry wood handles.
