Probably the largest rebate
plane made, this is based on what was known as the ’carriage
maker’s plane’. Lie-Nielsen have taken the basic
design and converted it to the dependability
of the Bedrock format in a very solidly built tool. Both the
handle and the knob will pivot to
either hand for easy access and complete control against tight
faces. Despite its size, the full
width blade and adjustable side nickers mean that it is a fully
functioning rebate plane
designed to make clean cross grain cuts. Supplied with A2 steel
cryogenically treated blade,
ductile iron body, bronze lever iron and frog with cherry handles.
The plane is fitted with scribing
blades (or nickers) on
each side of the plane body, just in front of the blade. The
purpose of these blades
is to slice cleanly across the end grain to leave a dead sharp
corner to the rebate.
The blades are ground flush with sides of the body and have
a slotted hole to
allow for precise depth adjustment. The blades are kept keen
by sharpening their
inboard edge that is the edge away from the side of the plane.
