planes are used before the surface
being prepared is finished with a Smoothing Plane. They are
built to bridge the hollows and skim the humps, a job they
do supremely well employing extremely long body castings
with soles up to 24” long to produce a flat surface,
or in the case of the jointer, as the name suggests, to produce
precisely mating surfaces particularly for a rubbed butt
joint on say a table top or panel.
